Miss Anna Gruener
Miss Gruener is a multi-award-winning Neuro-Ophthalmologist and Cataract Surgeon.
A graduate from the University of Nottingham Medical School she won an AstraZeneca Prize in Medical Sciences and the National Westminster Bank Prize in Health Care of the Elderly.
In 2011 she completed her MSc at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology at the top of her class.
Her specialist training took place at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Medical Eye Unit at St Thomas', the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, as well as Imperial College London.
As a T.F.C. Frost Fellow Miss Gruener also completed further clinical training in Neuro-Ophthalmology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, under the direct tutelage of Dr Neil Miller, the Frank B Walsh Professor of Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute.
In acknowledgement of her research – published in The Lancet, JAMA Ophthalmology and Neurology - she was subsequently awarded the title of Adjunct Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
In 2015 Miss Gruener was awarded the Ivor Levy Prize by the British Isles Neuro-Ophthalmology Club. That same year she became the United Kingdom Alcon Glaucoma Case Study Competition Winner.
In 2017 Miss Gruener was appointed as a substantive consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, where she has since established a modern and state-of-the art Neuro-Ophthalmology Service (based at QMC) with close ties to Neurology. As a member of the Skull Base Multidisciplinary Team she co-manages patients with her colleagues in Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Oncology and Endocrinology.
In 2019 her clinical research was acknowledged with a prize by the European Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.
Miss Gruener is one of only a select few clinicians in the world who is triple-fellowship-trained in Glaucoma, Inflammatory Eye Disease (Uveitis) and Neuro-Ophthalmology, which allows her to approach her work holistically and with a wide focus. She manages the whole spectrum of neuro-ophthalmic disorders, which includes any abnormality of the optic nerve.
In addition, Miss Gruener is currently one of only three dedicated cataract trainers at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, and as such takes great pride in training up the next generation of cataract surgeons (at the Nottingham NHS Treatment Centre). She performs micro-incision sutureless cataract surgery with one of the lowest complication rates in the country and is the point of referral for the management of complex and more challenging cataract surgery. In the private sector she also offers premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) to reduce dependence on glasses.
In 2024 Miss Gruener received the Individual Clinical Ambulatory Care Award at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for going above and beyond, for innovating and making a real difference to how the Division provides care for patients and staff.
Her world-class training combined with her dedication to excellence means that you can expect the most advanced clinical and surgical expertise available.
Mrs Maxine Beadsmoore

Since then she has become one of the most popular and sought-after specialty PAs in the Department of Ophthalmology.
She works tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure tests and investigations get done as required so that each patient’s appointment runs as smoothly as possible.
